Óbidos:  Charming Castle Town in Portugal’s Oeste Region

A Photographer’s Dream

Walking through Óbidos feels like stepping into a medieval painting. The town’s narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed houses adorned with splashes of blue and yellow, vibrant bougainvillea, and charming azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles).

Rich History

Óbidos’ history dates back to Roman times, but it truly flourished under Moorish rule before being reclaimed by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, in the 12th century. In 1282, King Dinis gifted the town to his wife, Queen Isabel, beginning a tradition where Óbidos became part of the Portuguese queens’ dowry for centuries. This royal connection helped preserve its beauty, as each queen left her mark on the town.

Events in Óbidos

While Óbidos is famous for its castle and medieval ambiance, it’s also known for the yearly returning cultural events and the local delicacies. From mid to end of july, the town hosts a renowned Medieval Festival, where visitors can witness jousting tournaments.

A highlight in spring is the annual International Chocolate Festival. Don’t forget to try Ginjinha de Óbidos, a delicious local cherry liqueur.

During the winter months, the town is transformed into a real live fairytale: Óbidos Villa Natal.

There is a little kiosk named “Real Casa do Pastel”. It’s located at the end of the road with the shops, right before you enter the “Porta da Vila” to the castle town.
I really love the Pastel de Nata here and I always recomend trying one after your session.
